Staff member Ellen O’Grady is taking on the massive challenge of running the London Marathon on the 22nd April in aid of YouthFed’s vital work with young people. As an NCS Programme Co-ordinator, Ellen sees the amazing work YouthFed does with young people first hand where our programmes really do change lives.
We caught up with Ellen to see how she’s getting on with her preparation for the big day…
So why did you sign up for the London Marathon running in aid of YouthFed? Wanted to challenge myself with a physical goal to aim for. I’ve always been interested in going the distance and never had the opportunity. What better way to help YouthFed inspire young people
Tell us how training is going and what you are doing to prepare for running 26.2 miles? Currently I’m aiming at running 25-30 miles a week with one long run and a few smaller ones in-between. Its currently going really well after recovering from a knee injury – I had to spend a lot of time in the swimming pool to help that!
Do you have a target time you’d like to complete the marathon in? 4:30 ideally
The other part of the marathon challenge is fundraising. How’s the fundraising going and what activities are you doing to meet your fundraising target? The fundraising is a challenge in itself! I’ve been baking and doing some small raffles from donated goods. A good friend is helping me run a couple of raffles in a salon she works at and I’ve had some Hair products donated for it.
What are you looking forward to most on the day? Probably seeing my family and friends at the finish line with a nice cold drink!
What would be your top 5 tips to anyone looking to take on a big challenge this year?
1. Be strong. Mental strength can be built just as well as physical strength.
2. Make a plan and stick to it
3. Learn – ask questions and do your research
4. Make sure you’ve got a good support network and don’t be afraid to ask for help
5. If it’s running – compression socks are amazing!!
We wish Ellen the best of luck with the marathon. If you would like to support Ellen then please donate via her fundraising page http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/EllenOGrady1 .
