Last Thursday we were able to welcome Cheshire Community Foundation, Storengy and Swansway Motor Group to visit our Chester Better Start group. As donors through the Cheshire Community Foundation’s ‘Fund It Forward’ grant, Storengy and Swansway Motor Group were keen to see the impact of Better Start on young people, thanks for their generous donation.
The session focused on Career Pathways, addressing the concerns many young people have shared about feeling pressure to have a clear plan once they leave school. This uncertainty can often lead to anxiety and, at times, rushed decisions about their future.
Our group at Better Start includes individuals with a wide range of experiences—from those who have completed university but lack confidence entering the workforce, to others who may not have finished high school or obtained GCSEs. With this in mind, the session is designed to explore the various options available, including employment support, further study opportunities, and job search strategies.
To help build confidence, a “Dragon’s Den” style group activity was tasked, where participants worked in teams to create and pitch a business idea to potential “funders.” This was a great way to encourage teamwork, creativity, and presentation skills.
The group also took a light-hearted Buzz Quiz personality test that offers tailored suggestions for suitable work or study paths.
Overall, the session is aimed at answering the question “What can I do next?”—providing practical information, boosting confidence, and helping young people feel better equipped to make informed decisions as they move on from Better Start.

Our sincere thanks go to Cheshire Community Foundation, Storengy and Swansway Motor Group for part-funding this project and their continued support to improve the lives of young people in Chester, Ellesmere Port and Northwich.
