Inspiring the next generation of cyber professionals

As we celebrate National Cyber Security Awareness Month, Youth Fed was proud to welcome 45 students from Riverside College to STFC Daresbury Laboratory, where we have our Digital Learning Centre, for an engaging and interactive cyber security session.

The two-hour session was led by Youth Fed trainer Mike Jones and gave students the opportunity to explore some of the key issues facing the cyber security sector today.  The session covered global cyber threats, threat-hunting and practical personal online safety techniques, helping students to understand both the wider cyber landscape and the steps they can take to protect themselves online.  A major highlight for many participants was seeing a live feed of actual cyberattacks and taking part in hands-on activities, including creating strong passwords and finding system vulnerabilities.  These practical activities helped bring the subject to life and demonstrated how cyber security professionals work to identify and respond to potential threats.

The students are studying Riverside College’s Extended Tech course, and the session also provided an opportunity to learn more about potential careers in the fast-growing cyber security sector.

The feedback from students was extremely positive, with comments including:

“I thoroughly enjoyed that.”

And, when asked about the potential of a career in cyber security:

“Definitely consider a career in cyber – especially because of the wages! And you know there’ll be lots of jobs in the future.”

We’re delighted that the session not only helped students develop their understanding of online safety and cyber threats, but also sparked interest in the career opportunities available within the sector.
